What is JLR doing around security?

JLR recently invested £10m to bring the latest engineering fixes to older vehicles between 2018-2022. So far, we have updated more than 75,000 vehicles and they are now immune to the BCM attack. This significant investment is in relation to the UK market only. This has the attention of the JLR board, and our investments will continue on this. We are still working hard on reaching as many clients as possible, and are working in phases as to not overwhelm our network of retailers and roadside assistance teams.

What does JLR advise for clients of pre-2018 vehicles?

JLR are working on a nationwide programme updating security features of eligible vehicles from 2018 with support from their retail network. This is part of the £10m into security to enable them to support even more clients. It’s a large operation and requires a phased approach, currently they are updating eligible vehicles registered in 2018 or later. This includes vehicles which are completely out of warranty which is an unusual approach for a manufacturer to take. [For older models before 2018/ Where the client does not yet have an eligible vehicles] We are developing new ways to support you and this will be communicated to you directly.
If you are looking for ways you can do more to protect your vehicle, one way is to check the car has successfully locked and the alarm is activated by pressing the lock button twice in quick succession - you’ll hear a beep when the car is secure. One click of the ‘lock’ button locks the doors, the second activates the alarm and its sensors. This is so that you can leave pets in the car safely if parking for short periods, such as paying for fuel after filling-up. Always lock your car when leaving it unattended. Don’t leave keys where they can be easily taken, for example near a letterbox – but do not hide them. If thieves break into your home, it is far better for your safety that they do not confront you for your keys. Use the Jaguar and Land Rover Remote app and switch on vehicle lock reminders and Guardian Mode for added security. All new vehicles come with a free subscription package for five years. The app is available in app stores. Ensure Secure Tracker/Secure Tracker Pro is activated.  All new vehicles come with a free Secure Tracker/Secure Tracker Pro subscription package for 12 months.

How do clients access an InControl/Remote app subscription?

InControl is a package that is offered to those clients wanting more piece of mind and visibility of their car's status. Through the App ('Remote') clients receive reminders when the car has been left unlocked, and 'Guardian Mode' which provides alerts should the car experience any unauthorised interaction. Clients buying new vehicles receive a complimentary five-year subscription, which has recently been increased from three years. For clients of older vehicles, or for clients of new vehicles renewing their subscription after the five-year period has elapsed, a one-year subscription can be purchased for £40 for a year, while for two years it is £60.
If clients opt not to go ahead with an InControl/Remote app subscription, they will not be affected in terms of their car's functionality.

Do you advise the fitment of third-party trackers?

We recommend Tracker's Battery Powered Retrieve unit, a device that complements In Control Secure Tracker Pro and can be installed in a variety of locations with minimal intrusion into the vehicle's electrical systems.  This has been evaluated, not only for performance, but for its electromagnetic compatibility with our cars' electrical systems.

Does a third-party tracker impact warranty etc?

Accepted Answer

Warranty will be invalidated if an intrusive tracker causes damage/interference with the vehicle. A customer can fit any device they want but we only recommended the Tracker Retrieve as it does not impact the vehicle systems.

Ghost is a brand, they offer a suite of products including immobilisers and trackers. The only system we recommend is the Tracker Retrieve as it does not impact the vehicle systems.

Is it advised for clients to disable passive keyless entry?

Accepted Answer

When referring to ‘keyless’ in the context of thefts, there are some common misconceptions around this; ‘Keyless’ is an umbrella term for different theft methods criminals can use. Through the ongoing work police and specialist partners, in 2018 JLR identified the emerging ‘relay’ theft method, which is mostly associated with keyless theft. This is where criminals intercept signals between the vehicle and key to unlock the car. JLR  were the first manufacturer to develop Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology and deploy it to their vehicles meaning they were not vulnerable to this theft type. This technology also mitigates the requirement to store keys in a faraday pouch. There have been zero thefts of vehicles with technology via the ‘relay’ theft method - it is no longer a threat to our vehicles with this technology. Our most recent security measures are to update our vehicles’ Body Control Module (BCM) – which is another keyless theft method where criminals hack the keyless entry system enabling them to start the engine. The security updates contain embedded technology to stop this method.
